When the world shut down in March 2020, schools had to scramble to figure out how to navigate virtual teaching, build an online community, and keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible. Overnight—and continuing to this day as Covid-19 guidelines continue to evolve and shift—my role at Beaver expanded to include crisis communication, video editing, website design, data visualization, and virtual event producing.
I rely on my journalism background to help distill the complex, ever-changing protocols and policies into clear and concise concepts for families, students (grades 6th to 12th), and faculty/staff.
Straightforward, consistent, and transparent design and communication have been the key to elevating stress and providing important health and safety information.
In addition, since a large part of our audience is kids—some as young as 11—it's been critical to infuse fun and familiarity into the content. Watching the Beaver mascot get a Covid test or learning about the protocols from a stuffed Beaver wearing a mask, gave our students a moment of levity in an otherwise stressful world.
